Thomas Park took several scores of recordings of machines made using a contact microphone, in high fidelity, and ran them through a program that adds random processes to the sounds. He chose the 100 best outtakes, and trimmed them to make them usable. These sounds are fun for listening, and would be ideal for using as elements in music or sound design. If you would like to embark on a live mixing adventure, you can try mixing the first 30 sounds in real time with "The Machine Shop" .

Here is a collection of sounds that began as high fidelity recordings of a shortwave radio. These recordings were then processed using a random effects processor-- the best examples of processed sounds were collected and uploaded. These sounds are ideal for those curious about shortwave radios, or for use as sound sources for music or sound design. Just for fun, you can experience live mixing, with the first 30 sounds here, by clicking on the "Shortwave Mix Station" .

Encrypted Transmission is a netrelease comprised of Generative works by DJ Frankenstone. Materials used were mostly home-created or home collected phonographic works. The author feels the effect is to offer a sort of controlled chaos of musical and spoken sounds from various periods in Western Post-Industrial culture. Not to delve to deeply into politics, but the now-familiar rhetoric of the countercultural underground has begun to sound more like plans for an art project by Bansky or some...

A set of recordings Thomas Park made with a sturdy contact microphone manufactured by Crank Sturgeon and Thomas' Tascam DR-05 Recorder. Each source file is in high fidelity, 24/96 quality, with no clipping and no effects added. Recordings were edited to isolate specific portions of sound, but that was the only additional treatment. Each recording was of a machine or mechanical object. You can try out a real-time looping environment using these sounds with "The Hi Fidelity Home" .

I have been working on my Generative-Iterative Python code for some time now. I use Python to process and mix sounds, often using many random processes. Generative-Iterative is, therefore, a sub-genre of Generative music that focuses on loop-based composition. In 11.2020, I perfected a technique of overdubbing through which I could automatically create tracks, in a manner of seconds. Music, in this way, could be mass-produced. The results were curated, and about 30% were retained, those of...

Thomas Park wrote music as the acts Mystified, Mister Vapor and AutoCad for over 15 years, during the late '90's, the oughts and twenty-teens. In 2017, Thomas retired all three acts. A large selection of music survived the years, with over 5000 files in archive, nearly all in lossless format. The "Archival Selections" series is a subset of Treetrunk Records, and it represents Thomas' efforts to share music he has archived from his three main acts, in lossless format. This series...

Jack Hertz returns to the Complex Silence Series with a deeply meditative and spacious soundscape. Complex Silence 34 is a study of a slow-moving life form that could be the mascot for everything that exemplifies ambient music. It occupies a patient space all its own in a deep universe without any consideration of time and Hertz captures this essence perfectly. Jack writes: "...this album was inspired by the starfish that populate the Pacific coast where I live. The beautiful creatures...

I grew up mostly in the 1980's. Many would agree that the music during this time period was often flashy, excessive, and transitory. America was wealthy as a whole and there was lots of corporate expansion. At the same time, the messy end of the Cold War left us feeling a fear of a nuclear apolcalypse. The media had hyped the war enough that hardly a day would go by without a thought of the end. I honestly did not think I would survive into my 20's. Luckily, I was wrong, and looking back, I...

Mystified's acquisition of a recording device has ushered in a new era for the band. Rather than mixing pre-created sounds or sounds created by other artists, mystified has embarked on the delicious task of making his own sounds from scratch-- or, rather, harvesting them from his surroundings, in phonographic style. Using this new device and a cheap microphone (soon to be replaced), mystified has captured through sound collage and direct recording the experience of apartment life in South City...

Following the success of "Particular Streams Remixes 1" and "Particular Streams Remixes 2", Thomas wanted to go another round, and created an open call for remixes using only material from his "Particular Streams" release. We at Treetrunk like this piece very much, and think it fits in nicely with the label and series. "Constant" pieces, for those unfamiliar, are musical works based on being as minimal as possible-- finding the least possible thing necessary for listening. These...

In the years between 2000 and 2012, Thomas Park lived in a low-rent apartment in the South Side of Saint Louis. There he made a number of recordings. Many of these recordings were used, in raw or processed fashion, in pieces of music (largely as his project, "mystified"). Thomas wanted to share the phonographic recordings he had saved on an external drive-- particularly those that were not changed through the use of digital effects. If you like, you can experience a real-time looping...

AN UNAUTHORIZED TRIBUTE TO RAPOON BY VARIOUS ARTISTS Why pay tribute to Robin Storey's Rapoon? As a listener, Robin's music was immediately interesting to me, because drone music as a genre was something I hadn't yet heard. Soon, I became captivated by this conversation between sounds-- samples interacting, some looped, others making unique or shorter appearances. Technically, then, this was musique concrete-- or largely that. It was also listenable-- very "musical" in a traditional...

I Googled "African American Composers", and learned quite a bit. First of all, there are not very many of them, at least that have been recognized. Some consider Scott Joplin to be a Classical Composer. The most popular point suggested that jazz might be "Classical For African-Americans". It occured to me that the rules of Classical are among some remaining that are out of date and, in my opinion, too narrow. Terry Riley's tape loops are Classical, but Acid Jazz is not and...

This is a collection of tracks touching on a major theme in Thomas Park's music-- espionage, whether it be of the Cold-War-Variety, or post-Cold-War. Tapes, radar, satellites. Paranoia. Dig it.

This very special release from Treetrunk documents and celebrates an event that happened August 11, 2008 at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Chicago, Illinois. Tribe of Astronauts is a loose recording collective consisting of some artists affiliated with Webbed Hand Records, Treetrunk Records, and other netlabels. It is an “anonymized” project, an opportunity for the artists to create work not in the style of their main projects. Any netlabel artist may release work as Tribe of Astronauts on any netlabel, under the condition that they release the work under Creative Commons or Public Domain, and claim no ownership of or exclusive rights to the...

Somewhere toward the end of one chapter and the beginning of a new one I found the strength to return to music and focus on creating a longform ambient piece that would reflect the sense of calm I had regained following a major crisis in my life. I came across a message posted on a blog (of all places) that seemed to speak directly to me and Complex Silence 15 was created while this thought was drifting through my head: "Peace. It does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise,...

Leading-edge ambient artist Seetyca has gifted Treetrunk with this excellent suite of 6 pieces. "The suite was recorded and mixed in October/November at Mbira v.04 studio by Seetyca, and mastering was by by Artin Mucht. This record was made by using samples of mystified and is dedicated to the time wasted by thinking about time running by." -- Seetyca. Note: The samples sent to Seetyca were phonographic in nature, and originated in the Saint Louis soundworld of mystified.

K.M. Krebs has been kind enough to approach Treetrunk Records with his latest release, "Fog Sequences". He explains: "Inspired by a series of fog photographs I recently saw at the National Museum of Contemporary Art here in Korea. All the tracks began as output from a generative FM drone generator which was run through unpredictable distortion effects (all made in csound). The results were then used as a basis for composing these 6 tracks." Mysterious, ever-changing,...

This release is comprised of examples of output of the original Python application, "Weird Science". Weird Science takes 1-2 keywords, searches the Internet Archive or thematic WAV files, downloads them and creates randomized samples from them. It then cues up a randomized loop-based player page.

"The inscrutable Tribe of Astronauts is a collective of varying number. Little can be known about the Tribe of Astronauts because they hide behind digital masks." -- Tribe Elder The Tribe of Astronauts recently contacted Treetrunk Records from the ammonia seas of Jupiter. Forming, on the huge planet, a kind of eternal ocean, the tides of ammonia wash against one another perpetually and savagely. The Tribe has garnered a field recording from their trip to Jove, and has provided...

"What first attracted me to the famous GTO was this notion of using metal objects for music. I was (and am) an industrial music fan, so I picked up some recordings for a listen. Rather than music that was simply bombastic, as was often the flavor of industrial at the time, I heard a music that used parts of cars to create something deeper and more soulful-- this was industrial on the brink of jazz, or jazz on the brink of industrial-- a music that spoke to my heart and mind and that I...
